Thanks for the advice re: headers and such--I try to put trigger warnings in tags and mention specific chapters that have noncon and such on ao3 because that seems to be the most common way to do it (and I have no idea how trigger warnings come off to other people), but I didn't do it in the headers here because it didn't seem common and I would really rather not end up with trigger warning wank. (It is, ironically, super triggering.)

AYRT - Yeah, I suspected that if some of you are new to the meme, you just may not have realized.

I didn't know when I first came here to do it either, because I wasn't flat meme viewing. But now that I'm in flat view, it's really necessary for people to not change the original prompt title in the header and just add [FILL] (even though you're correct that not everyone does it, which does get generally irritating).

If someone has warned in their prompt post originally, keeping the same warning on the fill helps the people in flat view immediately scroll past it. I did here from friends on the meme that they were annoyed that they would half-read a fill having no clue which prompt it was attached to and get immediately uncomfortable and annoyed. Not because it was slavery AU, just because they didn't want to read it, but otherwise would have had to link back to the beginning of the thread to figure it out.

So yeah... not a requirement in the rules, but if you're worried about the rest of the meme getting prickly with you about it, then it could just ease people's issues a bit.

SA - Doing it on AO3 is good too. But the meme definitely still needs a way to know what's going to be triggering or help them see what they don't want to read.

And to also ease your concern, I have in the history of this meme never seen trigger warning wank occur. So go forth and warn and don't feel like that's a thing here.

Mostly, I just wanted to vent. And to sympathize with someone else who felt the same way. Which is why I did it on the Off-Topic/Discussion Meme, where it would hopefully not feel like an attack to any anon, thread, or story in particular.

...and I'm not the "only a few people" anon, although that comment could be taken to mean, "Individuals have more power than you'd think on this meme! Post your own fills, you whiny slackers, and we'll have more kinds of content! Also, you don't have to be a slavefic (or Pokemon) lover to be on the Daredevil kinkmeme!"

Without, of course, the actual name-calling. (Says the whiny slacker who hasn't actually posted any fills for months, and even then they didn't really fill their prompts. Bleh.)

...although if our whining inspired that lovely Christmas filler, then maybe I'll be proud of being a whiny slacker. Those were beautiful.

Kinkmeme etiquette (WAS: Re: Foggy rapes Matt???)

^^Yeah, the headings thing was a big problem for me, as a flat-memer. I don't necessarily need all the old heading, but enough to say, "Oh, yeah, that's that prompt/genre" or "Ooh, that pairing, no thanks" is nice.

Sometimes a heading change can even be nice. (Why are we still pretending to talk about a completely different subgenre in these posts?) The extra work involved to check the link to the parent thread when all the metadata that's given on the header and in the first few lines of the post is a fill title or, worse, "[FILL]" is a pain, not to mention it requires going to the end of the post and it's almost impossible to not read at least the last line, which can kind of spoil the fill even if you were interested in it.

(I decided to change my heading, because, as a flatmemer, it's nice to know which part of the discussion this is about.)

Getting a comment you don't want

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone here have any tips for how to respond to a comment that you don't want on a fic?

For the record, the comment is along the lines of 'Great story!! Love the characters! Now put in x y z q r t!' when x etc are all things that you don't intend to put in the story or have already clarified aren't going to happen.

For the moment all I've done is say 'thanks for the compliment' but, uh, should I even elaborate on 'it's cool that you want x-t but that's not going to happen'?

I'd compare it more to a potluck where Group B brought a fair amount of curries and are discussing cooking tips, recipe ideas, etc. Person A brought a pie crust. It has potential and some people have expressed interest in it, but no one's decided to make a filling for it.

Person A asks why there's so much activity around the curry.

This is the most excitement the lunchroom has seen in days. Part of it (no one knows how large or small) erupts into chaos as people throw food, jump on tables, yell for order, and many other things. Some people sit perfectly still in their chairs and talk about what a nice lunch it is even as food and chairs go flying past their heads. Some stand guard over their dishes with a switchblade, threatening to cut anyone who looks at it wrong. Some climb on top of things for a better view, eating popcorn and throwing the seeds at people's heads. There are multiple attempts to take surveys and arguments over the motive and methodology of said surveys. Some people are arguing over whether Jupiter or Saturn is the most fuckable planet. It is unclear how they got to that point. Some people sigh and go back to their desks to play minesweeper. Some people remember it as the Great Curry War of '16. Some think it's just another Saturday

The next week, group C comes in with lasagnas and the process begins anew

I have no shame about letting someone know when something that they want is not something I'm doing or where I'm heading.

I think you just need to be upfront about why you feel their suggestion doesn't fit into what you were thinking for the story, and let them know that you really do appreciate them suggesting it and that they like the fic.

I tend to use those comments as a platform for discussing why I wanted to write the fic in the first place with people.

Like: "Thanks for the suggestion. It doesn't really fit with where I'm going with this story right now, and that's because I personally wrote this story for and am interested in exploring . But I could totally see some version of this story where that might happen, and appreciate that you love the fic so far."

Sometimes, that can actually turn into someone writing their suggestion as a gift fic, or a good conversation about why other people agree or disagree with your reason for writing the fic.

Lol it took out my brackets because I think it thought it was html, but that sentence should have read:

"Thanks for the suggestion. It doesn't really fit with where I'm going with this story right now, and that's because I personally wrote this story for INSERT REASON and am interested in exploring INSERT CONCEPT OR CHARACTER. But I could totally see some version of this story where that might happen, and appreciate that you love the fic so far."

Thanks for the script and advice! I'm worried, mostly, about coming off as ungrateful for comments or something like that, but at the same time, I'd rather let them know that if what they really really want out of the fic is x y z, they should be looking in a different place.

(Also I am slightly annoyed at the commenter because, well, I sort of already clarified in the story that there really is never going to be any q r t at all because reasons.)

You could also try the DD Secret Santa collection if you missed any of them because they showed up in the feed on the day of posting instead of on the day of their release.

There was some great fluff written for that.

I love this analogy. It so perfectly sums up fandom in general.

What's the appeal of flatmeme? It sounds so high maintenance compared to normal viewing

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to bookmark and keep checking back on the thirty or so threads that you might be kind of interested in? Or miss the absolutely awesome fill for the prompt that you thought would never go anywhere?

Re: Foggy rapes Matt???

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
SA: I meant, thirty or so threads *per round.*

Re: Foggy rapes Matt???

(Anonymous) 2016-01-16 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought so too, initially, and didn't get it.

But once I started flatmeming, I realized that (especially if you're on your phone), it just ensures that you don't miss anything.

By only following the threads I was interested in I was missing all this awesome conversation when things got off-topic or threads exploded.

Flatmeme generally you can just scroll by stuff you don't like for the most part, but you can also find when interesting things are being said on prompts you initially would otherwise have ignored.

And again it's the easiest option if you're on your phone since it's simpler and results in less tabs open.

There's 9 posts, right? With various fills throughout. Now let's say you're on page 14 of post 9, and there's a fill you're looking forward to on page 1. You also really like a fill that was in post 8, and it's still getting filled, and a couple in post 7. But you can't remember the pages they're on, especially when it moves onto the next post, and you could bookmark all of those fills you'd like to see prompted but there's always a risk those bookmarks will dissappear or accidentally get deleted. I've lost my bookmarks 3 times on my 4 year old laptop alone. Three through my own stupidity, but even a badly formatted update can do something you never expected.

So you can't guarantee you'll remember all of the posts and threads al of the fills are on, that you want to keep track of, and one fic you might have been keeping an eye on might go a while without updating so you might not even remember what you need to look for when you next check again. The best way to make sure you can catch everything is to flatmeme, you can't miss anything, everything new is on the last page, and you can scroll back and forth between fills and replies.

It took me a while to warm up to flatmeme view, myself, but once I did, I've never gone back to thread view. How will I know there's a fill on a prompt I was keeping an eye out on page 2 when we're all having a party on page 16?

Ohh! I'm hardly ever good with names, but yes, I've read that one. Very lovely. I gave it a Kudos :)

I wish I was exaggerating when I said I think I've read every fluff fic in the fandom. Sorry!

Are you okay with fluff that's entertwined with smut/a specific kink? Because I know of a fluff-y sort-of series that has plenty of cuteness and comfort but also is sexual ageplay and has discussions of PTSD.

Not Ageplay, no, sorry.

It's all good, I just wanted to check. I know that it's one of those things likely to either really interest or really squick people, and I'd rather not rec you fluff that squicked you out.

Sorry, tho, I don't have many more recs. I'm not super one for fluff.

In the future, maybe vent about the kinkmeme somewhere that's not the kinkmeme? Because right now it appears to have sparked a whole powder keg of hurt feelings and resentments and pointless complaining about things that aren't against the rules.

+1 from a new anon to the discussion - everyone should definitely keep on having fun doing their thing! But as a flatmemer it would be really really great to have more than a title to go on.
