Daredevil Prompt Post #12

Mod Post | Discussion/Off-Topic Post | Writing Challenges
AO3 Collection | Fills: Completed & WIPs

All Rounds & Other Useful Links

This post is for prompts involving characters from Netflix's Daredevil.

Now that The Defenders prompt post is live, all crossovers between anyone in the four individual shows should go over there. Prompts only including characters that appear in Daredevil should still go here.

Rules:
  • General
    1. YKINMKATO. Play nice. Respect others. If you don't like something, scroll on.

    2. All comments must be anon. If you would like to be politely banned to avoid anon-failing, leave a logged-in comment on the mod post or pm the mod account.

    3. Subject lines should only be changed if you're posting a prompt or a fill (indicators like OP or Author!Anon should go in the body of the comment).

    4. RPF is allowed. Crossovers, characters from the extended Marvel Universe and comics canon are allowed, but must relate to the 2015 TV show in some way.

    5. Prompts focusing on characters from other Netflix Marvel shows or the comics should go on their respective prompt posts, but crossovers with Daredevil can go here.

    6. Drop a comment on the mod post if you have any questions or problems.

  • Prompts
    1. All types of prompts are welcome.

    2. Use the subject line for the main idea of your prompt (pairing or characters, keywords, kink).

    3. Warnings are nice, but not mandatory. Get DW Blocker if there's anything you really don't want to see.

    4. Reposted prompts are allowed once one round has passed - e.g. prompts from post #2 cannot be reposted until post #4. Please include a link to where it has been previously posted.

  • Fills
    1. When posting a fill, either add [FILL] (or something similar) to the subject line, or change the subject line to the title of your fill.

    2. Announce your fill on either the Completed Fills Post or the WIP Post.

    3. Long fills can either be posted over multiple comments, or posted on AO3 and linked back here.

    4. Multiple fills are always okay.

    5. Fills can be anything! Fic, art and vids are all welcome.

Please post any prompts related to Season 2 of Punisher over on the dedicated Punisher prompt post, and put SPOILERS in the subject line!

Matt/any, What if Matt were biracial/mixed?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-09 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
With Hell's Kitchen having a long history of being a mixed-bag community in NYC, the most diverse city on Earth, it really isn't implausible. Let's say Jack is still white, but what about his mother, Maggie/Grace/whatever name it is?

The most likely candidates for a non-white racial background in 1980s HK would be latinx (Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban, or Mexican), and the beginnings of gentrification led to increasingly diverse waves of people moving in from Chelsea and Harlem—African American (mostly latinx and/or Caribbean), East Asian (Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese), South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bhutanese), Pacific Islander (Filipino), etc.

How does this affect Matt growing up? Is he “white-passing” or is he “visibly other”? How has it shaped his life experiences? Did his mother have conflict with his father over their different backgrounds that led to the split? Has he faced rejection from within his mother’s community due to being raised by his white father? How did the nuns take it? What racial prejudices and stereotypes has he had to contend with in his day to day life? Did it make him appear as a bigger token/diversity case (for scholarship+work opportunities)? Has his racial background exposed him more or less to the dark side of police brutality and the legal system? Is Daredevil more of a target?

Anything goes. My sad biracial ass doesn't have time to write this myself, so I leave it to y’all to take this idea and run with it.

[Mini-Fill] Matt/any, What if Matt were biracial/mixed?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
It shouldn't bother him as much as it does.

"Black male, 5'10", approximately 170 pounds..."

The description hums on the radio of every cop on the west side of Manhattan, while Matt adjusts his tie and his grip on his cane. It's another layer of misdirection, part of the mask, and yet--

"Señor Matt, ¿de dónde es usted?" Mrs. Cardenas asked, and Matt could've played dumb. He could've made more of an effort to match Karen's careful textbook pronunciations, not to sigh the ends of his syllables like his grandmother when she declared en ellos está el Diablo--

Instead he smiled and said, "Nueva York," and that made her laugh. And yet--

Bess Mahoney cornered them at Elena's funeral and tried to cheer them up. "You did right by her, boys. I told her, Foggy's a smart boy, he'll treat you right. I told her, don't worry about the suits, those white boys are from the neighborhood, they'll take care of you--"

"Black male, 5'10", approximately 170 pounds--"

Elektra had said they belonged everywhere precisely because they belonged nowhere. "Exotic, they call us," she whispered in his ear. "Do you know what that means? It means we're so pretty they forget that we're people."

Claire had just run her fingers over his hair--he needed a trim, it was getting long enough to spring back against the pressure. "I think you're the man this city created."

"A mutt, you mean?"

"The great American melting pot," she said wryly. "But that wasn't what I meant and you know it."

"I know what you meant."

He can hear Foggy on the phone as he gets closer to the office; he must be talking to his parents, because his r's and g's fade out and his vowels curl up at the edges. "Ma. Ma. Yeah, I'm coming on Sunday, you don't gotta--yeah, I'll ask Matt, but he is in fact a separate person, he might be doing something. I'll ask him. I just said I'll ask!"

By the time Matt actually gets into the office, Foggy's voice is back to Ivy League standards, because Columbia has a checkbox for first-generation college students but not for working-class accents. (Matt ticked every box on the application; his Ivy League voice got him called articulate.) "You're late, Murdock. That means first round's on you tonight."

"Can I take a rain check?"

"At this point I think you've got enough rain checks to buy the damn bar."

Matt unpacks his laptop and sets up his peripherals; he's got email from the Dominican Bar Association and Metropolitan Black Bar Association, but Bess Mahoney still calls him a nice white boy and he's never been stop-and-frisked when he's wearing a suit.

While he's wearing the suit, he's a black male, 5'10, about 170 pounds.

It shouldn't bother him.

a/n: I'm assuming this version of Maggie was Afro-Latina and this Matt is played by Jesse Williams. Critique is welcome.

OP: Gracias por su trabajo increíble, me encanta! Su atención al detalle fue bien hecho, especialmente para una pieza bastante corta pero conmovedora como esta.

I'm not a native Spanish speaker, I learned from my father, who learned after moving to México, but I know enough of the language and culture to appreciate the little things you added about Matt's accent and the change with his grandmother (I think it was his father's mother in canon, but it still works well). My father and I are both white-passing by most community standards, so I understand the pain he felt when Bess firmly declared him a white boy in contrast to the cops profiling him in the mask.

I also loved the reference to Elektra being biracial, as Elodie Yung is French-Cambodian, and the acknowledgedment of how mixed people face issues with belonging to either community and are seen as pretty curiousities. Good fancast pick with Jesse Williams! I'm surprised and touched that this was filled so quickly, many thanks!

As someone who also never fits in anywhere in particular because of my ethnic identity vs my appearance, I loved this story. ♥

My non-OP-but-still-sad biracial ass loves this.

I mean shit, I'm guessing you had a checklist of microaggressions to address, since you hit basically every single one. but it doesnt feel like a checklist at all, just the routine shit that happens when you see so many different groups of people on the reg. some that you shrug off and some that sticks in your craw forever.
You packed a shitload of emotion into a fairly compact piece. That's not at all a criticism of the length, it's perfect for the story. You took just as much space as you needed, and each scene packs a major wallop. I struggle with length and taking forever to get my point across, so I really admire short stories and the thought that goes into making sure every word serves a purpose, especially when that purpose is figuratively using emotion to punc the reader in the face.

One missed opportunity was the wonderful misunderstandings you get when you're right in the middle of your parents' skin tones and people get edgy about an adult and a kid of different races walking around together. Even when both parents were present, I still got weird questions as a kid because people assumed my caucasian mother had adopted me from some war-torn south american country, while my paper-bag-test-passing latino father was my babysitter or possibly my kidnapper.

In closing, you rock. I love your attention to detail. Your style makes me feel more than any of the Hemingway I've read. You really captured the essence of playing Biracial Bingo every day. I could practically hear Elodie speaking your Elektra dialogue. Thanks for introducing me to Jesse Williams, he'd make a super cute Daredevil, I gotta try and draw him. Keep doing what you're doing, you're really onto something here and I wish you luck in all your future writing ventures. You're diamonds, baby

This is painful and great. Perfect fancasting and the microaggressions that burn so hot. Nicely done.

Latina is correct in reference to a woman like Maggie, Latino is used for a man and also interchangeably with latinx for a person of indeterminate gender.

Nonsense like x or @ is never correct. It's Latino or Latina

OP: People, let's just agree that Maggie is Latina and leave it at that so this thread doesn't get screened by the mod.

Well, if your talking about a vast group of people that include both men and women, kind of like you would use a generalized "they" when talking about a group of mixed genders, you would say latinx. For example, "I have some latinx family members on my mother's side," or "I was just talking to the group of latinx people over there."

2nd fill- The blood of the covenant (is thicker than the water of the womb)

(Anonymous) 2017-03-22 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I feel dumb for replying to such an old prompt, especially one that already has a fill. Everyone will probably hate this, as I combined it with a bunch of my other au plot bunnies, but I'm posting it none the less. Enjoy.

“Is this room 312?”
“Yeah, who are you looking for – Oh, sorry.”
Matt kept a genial grin on his face. He had learned young how to smile and be charming when what he actually wanted to do was bite someone’s head off. “For what?” My eyes? My limp? My skin? What part of me do you find so pitiful you need to apologize for it? All three?
“You’re blind, right?” The guy sounded nervous. Matt wanted to make a joke about how it wasn’t contagious, but he bit his tongue. He did that a lot, so it was easy.
“So they tell me,” Matt said, keeping that grin plastered on his face. Next he knew would be the questions about how he lost his sight and what happened his leg. Then the inevitable ‘So where are you from, like really?’ Then the guy would get offended by something Matt had said, even if Matt did allow the humiliating interrogation to move forward without protest. Then the accusation that Matt was only admitted to look good on the fliers highlighting diversity. Matt had gone through dozens, maybe hundreds of these conversations. He steeled himself for one more. “I hope that won’t be a problem.”
“Why would it be- Oh! You’re my new roomy!”
Matt walked further into the room. His safety cane hit what Matt hoped was his bed. Matt leaned the red and white cane against the object and felt it. Yep, a bed. Matt removed the duffel from his back and then set it on the bed. Shedding the weight felt amazing. His left leg left the pain range of hundreds of needles lightly stabbing it for the dull ache pain range. Matt stuck out his hand in the stranger’s direction. “Matt Murdock,” he said proudly. He would always be proud of his father’s name.
“Foggy Nelson.” Foggy gripped Matt's hand and shook it firmly.
“Interesting name,” Matt said.
There was a slight pause. “Well- sorry, I shrugged a second ago. Anyway, it’s kind of a long story.”
“You don’t have to keep apologizing,” Matt said. “It’s not your fault I can’t see.”
“Yeah, I know it’s annoying. I do it with everybody, especially people I just met. I get really nervous, I over think everything, I convince myself I've said or done something terrible and then I end up apologizing every five seconds. I’m working on it, but social anxiety and I have been together for a long time, so I don’t see the relationship ending anytime soon. Just yesterday we were picking out curtains.”
Matt laughed. This Foggy guy seemed totally at ease with him. Matt wondered if Foggy was a person of color too. That would explain the lack of racial tension, but not the lack of ableist questions. “Whatever curtains you two decide on will be fine by me. I don’t really see the difference to be honest.”
Foggy laughed. “Man I am so glad you have a sense of humor. If I had to put up with another roommate telling me how abnormal it is to talk about my mental health issues like they’re people I would scream.”
Matt sat down on his bed, and in doing so gave himself even further relief. “Sometimes I feel like the pain in my leg is like a separate entity, not a person, but something separate from me. I'll picture it as animals or lightning or something like that.” Matt was stunned he had just confessed that. Something about this Foggy guy made him put his guard down.
“So you get it,” Foggy said enthusiastically. “This is going to be so great.”
Matt became weary again. “What is?”
“Us as roomies! You’ve already checked off almost everything on my ideal roommate checklist.”
Matt found himself smiling. “Such as?”
“Sense of humor, obviously. Not a jerk, pretty important. Not a homophobe, kind of falls under the not a jerk thing. Doesn’t see Autistic people as a punchline, kind of vital. Loves showtunes, that one I'm flexible on.”
Matt's breath caught in his throat. Did Foggy know? No, it had to be a coincidence. “Good list.”
“What’s yours?”
Not racist. Not ableist. Not… “I don’t really… Tidy, I guess. I mean just the floors. Someone who keeps the floor more or less clear… That’s my ideal roommate.”
“That’s it?” Foggy sounded almost disappointed.
“Not a smoker,” Matt said cautiously.
“Tobacco or… ya know.”
“Both,” Matt admitted. “I don’t like the smell of either, and I don’t want any contraband in the room.”
“Big on the rules huh?”
Matt let a little annoyance creep into his voice. “Well we are law students.” And they'll take any excuse to make an example of the crippled mutt who dares to aspire to such lofty heights. I don’t intend to give them one. Matt was now pretty sure Foggy was white. Might as well lay all the cards on the table. “And doesn’t try to figure out what I am all the time. I don’t know either, it’s a pointless quest.”
This was where they always asked ‘How can you not know?’ Matt braced himself.
“Okay, what’s four and five? Keep in mind five should be a joke, except I was being totally serious and love of showtunes is a must. Unless you don’t like them. Then we can work around it.”
Matt smiled. “I like musicals. I can often follow along on them even without audio description. Because every time anything happens someone sings a balled about it.”
“Great! You are officially my ideal roommate. Quick, let’s hear four and five.”
“Ummm… Religious tolerance, and…” Matt remembered five should be a joke. “Not from Jersey.”
Foggy laughed. “No worries, I'm from Hell's kitchen.”
“Really?” Matt grinned. “So am I.”
“No way! That’s amazing. This is fate Matthew. We are destined to be best buds.”
Matt realized he was wearing a 100% real genuine smile. He knew eventually Foggy would say something racist or ableist and Matt would start to hate him, or he would get sick of keeping his stuff off the floor and start to hate Matt. But for now, there was no harm in enjoying the guy's company.

Wtf this is amazing?! I'm so happy this story exists. It's wonderful. Your imagination is amazing. Foggy with mental illnesses could honestly save my life. If there's never any more of this story, even having this little window into their lives was so refreshing and really cheered me up. I wish the tv show could have been like this.

"Do you need help with the rest of your bags?"

Matt shook his head. "I packed light." There hadn't exactly been another option, since all of Matt's worldly possessions fit in one bag, but Foggy didn't need to know that.

"That's amazing. I wish I could do that. The mere thought of leaving behind even one of my CDs or stim toys would give me a nervous breakdown."

Matt smiled. This guy was so earnest. "Couldn't you download the CDs onto your computer?"

"I could, but I like interacting with them physically. I reorganize them when I need something to settle my brain down. Sometimes by year. Sometimes by alphabet. Usually by preference, which is constantly changing. I know I sound like a crazy person right now-"

"You don't," Matt said firmly. "What's the current order?"

"Oh boy," Foggy sounded giddy. "My Fair Lady soundtrack is currently number one. Then the soundtrack for The Prince of Egypt. After that is Fiddler on the Roof. Dr. Horrible's sing along blog is next. Number five would be the soundtrack to The Little- You were just being polite, weren't you?"

Matt was shocked by the sudden shift Foggy's voice took from being suffused with sheer joy to sounding heavy with embarrassment. "Of course not. I like listening to your voice." Now it was Matt's turn to be embarrassed. He blushed and hoped his dark skin made it less noticeable. "I mean... That didn't come out right. I just meant..."

Foggy laughed. "That's awesome. Really? You like my voice? Mine?"

Matt felt his face getting warmer. "I have to go. I just remembered this important thing I have to drop off at the Registrar's office." Matt stood up and flinched at the pain that radiated up his leg. He clutched his support cane tight while he used his other hand to reach for the longer lighter cane.

"Wait! I'm sorry. I didn't mean to laugh. I always do this. I'm so awkward. But you shouldn't have to leave. You just got here and probably want to unpack. I'll go. Please don't let me chase you out of your own room. Damnit. It's only the first day and I'm already making terrible first impressions."

Matt knew that feeling. He sat down. "I'll make you a deal. I'll stay if you stay too."

"Oh, okay." Matt heard the sound of bed springs compressing. "Thanks."

Matt fiddled with his cane. "You probably think I'm... defensive," Matt said.

There was a brief silence. "Sorry, I shook my head. But I don't think that."

"You don't have to apologize," Matt said.

"I know. You said that, but I... That's just the way I am. I can't help it. I know it annoys people, and I tried for a long time to change, but it was a pointless and exhausting quest. This is who I am. An autistic nerd with social anxiety, executive dysfunction and bipolar disorder. I've learned to accept who I am."

"I didn't realize that. I thought you just felt awkward about having a disabled person of color as your roommate."

"Oh! Well I don't. Although I guess I would say that even if I were. But I have a disability too. I mean- I wasn't trying to compare- I'm not saying that just because I'm neurodivergant I know what it's like to have a visual or mobility impairment. I only meant..."

When Foggy paused to take a deep breath Matt seized the opportunity. "Foggy, it's okay. Just breathe."

Foggy let out his breath slowly. "I guess I'm the defensive one," he said with a chuckle. "This is probably the last thing you wanted, to be saddled with a roommate that's going to freak out all the time."

"That's better that a roommate who-" Matt cut himself off before he could tell a story that would reveal too much. "Maybe we're both a little self-conscious," he said instead. "It sounds like we're both going to stick out here. Even if that's not what we'd prefer."

Foggy's voice once again filled with cheer. "Well if we're going to stick out we might as well stick together, right?"

Matt laughed. "Great pun."

"I'm particularly proud of my puns."

"That's actually alliteration."

"I'm rolling my eyes at you Matthew."

Matt laughed again. It felt really good. He couldn't remember the last time he felt so comfortable around another person. He knew it wouldn't last, but for now it felt really nice.
