Matt really really hates fire drills. The blaring of the alarms in his dorm is absolute murder on his hearing, especially when he has to walk through the stairwell, where the cement walls do nothing but bounce the sounds around like an echo chamber. The first time he has to go through one, he vomits after he gets outside.
It doesn't help that their dorm has been having a lot of false alarms lately--mostly due to microwave fires, and once or twice just a faulty mechanism. Matt knows that some people have started just waiting the alarm out in their rooms, because they're certain that it's just another false alarm.
Except one day there's an actual fire, and Matt can't just stand by while people get trapped in their rooms. So he runs through the dorms, knocking on the doors of people who are still in their rooms, as his perception of the world grows increasingly warped by the distortions in his radar from the alarms, the fire, and the smell of things burning.
