Rewatching season 2, episode 1, and the opening with Matt and Foggy walking down the street. The scene when someone says "hey Foggy, looking good" and he's all smiles and the next moment he and a woman bump into each other and she calls him an asshole... ok, what's the purpose of that scene?

Maybe just to illustrate that everyone in the community knows Nelson and Murdock. Or that Foggy specifically is friendly without everyone in the neighborhood.

Apart from the woman that thinks he's an asshole, of course!

Character establishing moment. First interaction shows that Foggy’s the one who makes connections to people, the one with a network. They sprinkle that in a lot actually in both seasons - 'my friend in the DA's office' and 'so-and-so said we're gonna be offered jobs', etc. Unlike Matt, Foggy's the one who talks to everyone.

Second bump is twofold - it shows that even if Foggy is well-known, he can't win them all and it also tells the viewer, hey, this is funny, this guy is lighthearted/funny.

Yeah, but it seemed so out of nowhere. Especially when the woman called him an asshole and he just laughed like nothing had happened.

Maybe he knows her. Maybe she hates him and just always does that. Maybe she tried to get Nelson and Murdock to represent her one time and they refused because she was guilty, so now she hates them.

Maybe she's going to be the big bad in the next season! :-D

The dialogue/line-delivery in that scene was overall terrible, so in that context it didn't seem out of place to me.

(But aside from that, she just came across as a typical rude New Yorker lol)

Agreed that maybe it was just meant to give colour to the neighborhood. Someone knew him and waved at him, the other woman didn't but it's the stereotype of rude New York.

I have no idea what was wrong with that scene. They filmed it at least 25 times, so that couldn't have been their best take.

Why, what was up with it?

Yeah, I saw someone on twitter that was there the day it was filmed and said they did it a bunch of times but tbh the scene didn't seem that difficult? who knows tbh

I thought it was very much a smirking nod from the showrunners to the viewers that they're aware that Foggy is appreciated and hated equally. Last season people were tweeting the showrunner to please kill Foggy, people were approaching Elden on the street and asking why Foggy couldn't be supportive of his superhero best friend, and this season, goddamn if they didn't dial those same Foggy traits up to 11.

I mean jfc Patton Oswalt wasn't a Foggy fan last season and Samuel l Jackson tweeted this morning that he's not a Foggy fan, so people can't say the showrunners don't know how the public is taking Foggy (and Karen tbh).

I honestly don't get why someone would not like Foggy. I mean, he made done questionable choices this season, but he's certainly not the only one! As a character though, I think he's great. I think the show needs him, and I can't imagine me liking it anywhere near as much (or at all, frankly) if he wasn't in it.

DA I feel like they dont like that he is used for comedy purposes and for some say the actor fails delivering (that's what much people said post season 1)

I do believe it's a good character and they are doing a good job, he has that comic feel tho Elden has said he hasn't read the comics. He is doing it good so far, at least for me...

I've read in tumblr and other sites that they feel like Foggy drags Matt that without Foggy Matt will be so much better but i think that's what the showrunners wanted with their relationship.

Charlie did an interview where he said that Matt and Foggy relationship rushed through things and some wounds from s1 are still there, and in s2 things just imploded.

AYRT
That's definitely true about the relationship between them. From their first scene together there was all the tension still from the end of season 1. But that's good, it wouldn't have felt natural for things to be hunky dory again after everything.

I think the comedy thing is the issue, because that's not what he is. Not really. He has comedy moments, but he is not the comic relief. He is the voice of reason; while Matt and Karen go too far, he is there to pull them aside and tell them to stop it, and even to hold them back if need be. Without Foggy, the show would be Matt beating up badges 24/7 and Karen running around putting herself into danger for the sake of a client, or a story, dependi go on the job she is doing at the time. I feel like they would both die very quickly!

That's my main problem with that scene where he and Matt are walking: Elden's delivery is terrible. I'm not surprised at all that they had to do so many takes, if that's the kind of performance he was giving them to work with.

Def your opinion and valid, but people are divided even here on the meme. OTOH Charlie Cox seems to go out of his way to support Foggy's inclusion and importance in Matt's life, so there's that.

Well, he's read the comics. He knows Matt needs Foggy.

Nothing's wrong with him. He's not attractive and he's onscreen nonetheless, so some people hate him/think they could be in Elden's place (see Patton Oswalt).

Not attractive? He's alright. He's definitely not UNattractive. :)

I mean, he has a cute smile and in the right lighting and hair he's great, but most of the time he's really average-looking

(frozen comment) Re: Okay, what is that?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-17 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I find him sometimes way too nice and also quite frankly passive-aggressive.

(frozen comment) Re: Okay, what is that?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-17 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
So he's a decent, non-aggressive/confrontational character who doesn't want his friends to be shot in the face. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
