Matt and Frank have fallen into this weird friends with benefits arrangement that neither of them seems quite willing to give up on. As it goes on, Matt starts trying to indulge his masochistic tendencies in progressively more obvious ways: first by choosing the roughest brick walls to let himself get pushed up against, then understating the actual degree of his injuries when Frank asks if he's okay to do it, and so on. Frank doesn't really notice. But soon enough, Matt starts needing it harder. He asks Frank to hurt him better.
The problem? Frank Castle is a lot of things, but a sadist is not one of them.
