OP here, and oh my god, I love you. Don't be sorry for the angst, it's completely appropriate and delicious. And I didn't think they were OOC, I definitely buy that this is what Ben and Jack were like when they were young.

I love everything you did with their relationship. I love the competitiveness, I love the bittersweet humor and the understated tragedy (and the hints at impending tragedies).

I have a real thing for brainy guy/brawny guy ships and you pushed all my buttons. I love that Ben is just as much a foolhardy scrapper as Jack, even though he uses his words instead of his fists.

My favorite part is probably the whole scene at Josie's. Jack flirting with Josie while caressing Ben's back. The money issues. The little kiss on the forehead.
