After Stick gets onto him about his silk sheets, Matt's Catholic guilt starts to wear at him so he in turn takes a vow of poverty. Foggy and Karen start noticing that he used to bring his lunch or something, but he gives it away every morning to homeless people because he can hear their stomachs growling. He lives off the bare minimum, but eventually, it all starts to take its toll on him. Foggy finally figures out what's been going on and has a talk with him one day, helping him through his guilt and making him realize that he's more than fulfilled his vow, and "dammit Matt, eat something for God's sake!"
