Matt is in the middle of fighting when something causes his senses to overload. It throws him off so bad that he gets injured.

Maybe it's a sudden explosion nearby, or a car alarm. Whatever it is, it happens at a time when he's focused on hearing, and he doesn't get enough warning to pull back on his senses.

Bonus points if he's still suffering the effects when he tries to call someone for help.
