Zombies! Hell's Kitchen! Apocalyptic romance! Work with me, anons.
What I'm seeing is that the first zombie outbreak happened a few years ago. Blame it on whatever you want. (I like the idea of the Chitauris having diseases of their own that get spread during the invasion or left behind in their dead bodies, which humans cannot tolerate and do something something undead.) Hell's Kitchen is one of the few bastions left in an overrun nation, partially because Fisk and the Russian mafia et al took the damn thing over and now control all distribution and trade. It's a rough place but at least it's safe. Ish. In comparison to life outside. The government is corrupt but stable, so really basic amenities (electricity, plumbing, emergency broadcasts) are up and running.
Matt patrols quietly at night, both to help with crime and to search for supplies in the rest of the city. Karen's a whistleblower for a company doing highly unethical research into the zombie outbreak (ie purposefully infecting subjects and doing experiments on them to see if they can stop it). Matt and Foggy are still a team - maybe they're trying to help the justice system get back on its feet.
I am a HUGE fan of any and all pairings and the angst that comes along with apocalypse stuff. Matt/Foggy/Karen and Vanessa/Fisk/Wesley are my joys. But honestly, just, zombie au and I'll be happy.
