So if you have a bad case of inappropriate guilt you know that it doesn't just stick to one thing. It sort of infects your life and eats you from the inside and it kind of makes you a bleeding heart about everything. I kind of see his guilt portrayed pretty simply in a lot of stories ie 'I don't deserve possessions' or 'I don't deserve nice friends' etc. etc. etc. but I need some more fucked up magical thinking in my life. Because to figure that the city is fucked unless he takes the weight of it on his shoulders, the dude has some serious magical thinking.

What I want is Matt just feeling guilty about things that aren't his fault. Maybe there's a world crisis and he can't afford to send aid so he feels directly responsible. Maybe his neighbor who has three kids has a less spacious apartment than he has and he feels like this is his fault. Maybe one of his childhood friends from the orphanage didn't get as good of grades Matt did in high school so he couldn't afford to go to college like Matt could and Matt thinks 'if I had just helped him study more. . .'
