Assuming she's Matt's paternal grandmother, she was probably saying it about her husband. Also, it may have been affectionate (meaning that the Murdock boys are mischievous).
But I'm totally down for reading a story about Jack's relationship with his verbally abusive mother, and how he swore he would never treat his own kid like that, if that's what you're going for.
