Re: Matt and Karen: She finally tells him off for how he talks to her.

//Matt is honestly the shittiest person ever to all women in the comics//

Ha ha OMG NO. Matt's like 40 in the comics and has only been with about 15 women EVER that we've seen and some of the women he's loved have done godawful things to him, like Karen, and he forgave Karen for destroying his whole life. More importantly, shit might go down, but Matt's not going into a relationship with a woman thinking about using her and discarding her and twirling his evil mustache, yo. That's Tony Stark territory there. There have been women who want to get into his Matt's pants and he refuses, or female friends who are hot for him and he doesn't take advantage, and he's been targeted and used by women, too (Felicia Hardy comes to mind). When Matt's been a dick to someone, nobody needs to beat him up about it because he does that to himself.

Seriously tho, have you read Iron Man? Tony Stark is consistently awful to women, men, aliens, small children, Earth, the list goes on (and keep in mind I like Tony as a character, he's a rich tapestry). In the recent Superior Iron Man he just effectively enslaved the left coast for money and then raped and mind-wiped Matt Murdock, ffs. How much do you want to bet Matt will forgive him when he remembers the truth, tho? My money is on YES, because that's what Murdock does, that's who he is. The Winter Soldier tried to kill DD (DD was too fast for Buck) and DD forgave him, because he knew Bucky was brainwashed. There's an argument here for egalitarianism from Matt wrt gender, and why not considering his stance on justice and fairness.

But, hey, let's talk about Reed Richards and his history of verbal and physical abuse of his wife, Susan Storm, yeah? Or how about Namor who has a history of stalking and chasing married women and trying to get them to cheat, because to him it's all a game (eventually Sue Storm dumps Reed and hooks up with this guy, ugh). What about Cyclops who is a cheating cheater who consistently cheated on his wife for so long right under her nose and then was surprised when Jean busted him. OK, that wouldn't have pissed me off nearly as much if he hadn't been spending all his time being so righteous to his team at the same time. Wait, but don't forget about Hank Pym, one of the founding members of the Avengers, who wasn't only guilty of physically abusing his wife, but also eventually straight out assaulting her with weapons and shit and trying to kill her. Speaking of true love, what about another Avenger, Clint Barton, whose wife, Bobbi, was drugged and raped and what does he do when she tells him? He doesn't believe her. Even Peter Parker torched his whole marriage to MJ for a chance to bring back his Aunt May. It's a heroic thing to do, sure, unless you're Mary Jane.

Mind, I'm still talking about Marvel and I haven't even gotten into details yet. I haven't touched on DC or Image or any other houses. If you think Matt is the worst ever to women in comics, you should expand your horizons a little more because, all things equal, Matt comes off pretty well compared to the rot out there.

It is interesting to think about how Matt's interactions with women have so dominated who he is in the comics though.

Because as terrible as Stark, Richards, Pym, etc.'s history is, they're not still, years later, running around in their books making amends for the ways they've wronged the women in their life and thinking about them and their impact on a regular basis.

And with Matt, that's clearly the case. There hasn't been a storyline since Karen Page's death that hasn't touched on how her death impacted Matt and caused him to spiral. Same thing with Milla Donovan, and for a long time with Elektra.

I think that the other characters you mentioned are often too arrogant or self-centered to be able to reflect like that. Certainly in later storylines, there's not a sense that anything going on with any of the female characters is really traumatizing to the past or current men in their lives the same way that Matt's relationships have affected him well after the fact.

So even if his relationships have had their issues, there is at least a sense with Matt that he really felt every relationship that went wrong and carries it with him, which is I think pretty unique. And you're right that some of that comes from his strong sense of forgiveness and desire for social justice.

I think he and Peter Parker have that in common, actually, because Gwen Stacy is the only other equivalent type of relationship I can think of that had such an impact years later.
