IIRC in the comics, once they become friends, the only time Melvin ever attacks DD or Matt (Melvin knows Matt is DD) is when forced, drugged, or blackmailed into it. He's kidnapped Matt and done him some serious wrongs, but Matt always forgives him or tries to defend him and they eventually resume their friendship. It's all kinds of heartbreaking and beautiful.
