Matt is full of guilt and he's convinced that everything bad in the world is somehow his fault. Before he became a vigilante, he had to deal with that guilt and self-hatred when it became too much, right? So. Matt used to go out and pick up guys, the violent type that would always end up hurting him. Then he proceeded to let them have rough and violent (and bloody?) sex with him.
He stopped doing that when he became Daredevil. But now he's benched because of a really serious injury and the guilt is too much.
