Fill: affection can be exhausting

(I'm finally home, so I can work on this.)

Foggy snores. Not particularly loud, mind that. Not like Peterson, two floors down, who seems to have a fucking pig living in his chest. No, Foggy's is just barely growlier, raspier than an even breathing would be. Should be bearable, but isn't.

Matt was never a heavy sleeper, but needless to say, since the accident, any external stimuli is enough to disturb him.

A cat meows a block over. Two sirens heading northeast. The nauseating scent of the dumpster down the alley just barely masking by the stench of Foggy's dirty clothes pile.

Matt turns on his back, sighing. Clearly he won't be getting any sleep any time soon. Defeated, he gets up and grabs one of the books on his nightstand. Since he can't rest, he might as well go over some topics from today's lecture that weren't all that clear.

He makes it through five pages before Foggy's breathing falters, which makes him cough and eventually wake up.

Foggy blinks a few times before his eyes can properly focus on the sight before him. Matt is sitting cross-legged on his bed, a book open on his lap, fingers quickly sweeping the pages. Foggy's brain has a split second of confusion, stupidly thinking "why is he reading in the dark...?", before he mentally kicks himself.

Inner embarrassment over, it leads to a different source of worry: Matt is reading braille in the dark. Dark means night. Night means they should be sleeping. Matt isn't sleeping. Why?

"Jesus, Murdock," he mumbles. Matt tips his head to the side, like he always does when he's paying extra attention to something. "What time is it?"

"I don't know. Probably past two."

"Uhm," Foggy rubs a hand over his face. "Right. What are you doing?"

"Going over that Civil Procedure textbook again. Some stuff wasn't quite clear today, don't you think?"

Foggy frowns and then, for added drama - because he needs Matt to get his point across, groans. "You're up, in the middle of the night, so you can read the world's most boring textbook known to men?"

Matt chuckles, turns a page. "Yeah, well, college doesn't come cheap. I want to make every penny pay off."

"And that, my friend, is a very responsible thing to do! Adults all over the globe are suddenly hit with a wave of pride, yet don't know why." As expected, Matt giggles like the big nerd that he is. Foggy feels his heart clench at that. "But you also need sleep. So put that book aside and go get some rest."

"Foggy, come on, I'm not tired. I'm not even gonna be long, it's just for an hour or two."

"No. I refuse to let you sink down to such low nerdy levels. You can't sleep? That's fine, we'll just stay up, talking about our dreams and goals until the soothing sound of my voice lulls you to rest."

"Foggy--"

"No, I won't have it, Murdock." He sits up. "Tell me, young man, where do you see yourself in five years from now?"

Living alone, hopefully, Matt thinks and immediately feels horrible about it. He can tell by Foggy's heartbeat - rapid, but steady - and the subtle change in his breathing, that this is sincerely worrying him.

Sighing, he puts his book aside and leans against the wall, stretches his legs in front of him. "Free of debt?"

Foggy snorts. "Sorry, pal, you're a college student. You'll never be free of debt. Your grandchildren will still be paying your loan."

OP, I'm sorry that this isn't really long and quite possibly NOT what you were expecting, but I hope you like it. (^_^)
