It's canon that Matt is more sensitive to motion sickness, so why not? It probably doesn't matter too much in the city, since he never seems to leave his general area of Manhattan, but it could be if he needs to actually take a longer ride somewhere.

Even though Hell's Kitchen doesn't have a subway line, it doesn't need one because it's so small, and if you're leaving the area, basically every subway line is easily accessible at the Port Authority and Penn Station. Cabs are super expensive, too, especially for short rides at night, when there's the initial $5 charge and the premium for after hours. Probably the reason they use cabs on the show is because subways are expensive to film in.)
