In the comics, Matt is bullied every day as a child and his father forbids him to fight, he makes Matt promise to never fight, and Matt wants to be a good boy so Matt takes all the bullying silently, he takes all the awful things done to him for a long time until he snaps and fights back and is victorious at defending himself. He's so excited and happy, he tells his father and Battlin' Jack Murdock is *furious* and hits Matt for defending himself.

The prompt: Jack Murdock never died, and although he loves Matty very much, Jack is still a sad alcoholic who hits Matt whenever Matt shows up at home with a bruise or it looks like Matt has been fighting. The first time Matt takes Foggy home (during college) to meet his father for Thanksgiving dinner, Matt's sporting bruised knuckles and a busted lip and Foggy gets a front row seat to the Murdock family dynamics, which explain a LOT about Matt.
