AYRT I know. He also was homeless during the tail end of Nocenti's and the beginning of Chichester's run but this was basically all connected to how much he was knocked down a peg during Born Again until he got his legal license back :P Waid's run made a parallel in the beginning where Matt lost his source of income bc Foggy didn't want to be partners anymore but was not destitute this time due to having his debts paid off and everyone wanting to give him favors.
Giving that all up as he apparently has would lead him to be financially vulnerable for p. much the first time since the nineties (unless he was destitute during Shadowland/Andy Diggle's run - I've read almost all of vol 2 but I'm not quite finished). Which is a huge decision for Matt to make because it means he would rather be financially and socially vulnerable rather than have people know that he and Daredevil are the same person. I have no idea why Matt would choose to do that to himself but we're only on issue one and I'm sure we'll find out.
WELL as soon as I started poking around in comics, I fell for Frank super hard, it's embarrassing how much he's my type of character
really what I ship is Frank/Occasional Happiness, and Matt seems 1) a pretty likely candidate to understand and put up with his issues even if he doesn't agree, and 2) definitely the candidate most likely to get anything written for, and 3) yeah it's hot
I don't really OTP it, though, I am a multishipper forever
Your favourite fic things, and things that you don't get
By which I mean, what is/are your favourite fic clichés, tropes, linguistic quirks, and so on, and what is/are fic cluches, tropes, and linguistic quirks that you don't really get? Please try to keep it light on that last one. Of course, if this is too wanky, please delete it, Mod, and I'll start one just for things we like.
I'll start off. One of my favourite fic things is outsider POV, because it provides a kind of meta-viewer where we have a pure audience surrogate and there's lots of room for narrative gaps which are just the best. I've always struggled with abstract AUs like caveman AU or like, an AU where all the characters are shoes or something, because I feel like it's much harder to get voices right in those contexts and I find them a bit difficult to follow as a result.
(Bonus, uncategorised because I love it but probably for the wrong reasons: I can't help but laugh every time I read 'his breath came out in pants' because I always just imagine little clouds of air in slacks or pinstripes and I think 'hey, at least something has some clothes on'. It's so cute and it always makes me smile.)
what's the best way to deal with your prompts getting taken in ways you don't like but technically aren't derailing?
it feels like every time there's any response to one of my prompts, it manages to go in directions that I didn't rule out because it didn't even occur to me anyone would want that, that's the opposite of the point!!!
maybe I'm just out of step with the meme's culture or unnaturally picky and should just write more of my own stuff, but it's really frustrating. I don't want to swoop in as the fun-forbidding OP or shit on other people's prefs because YKINMKATO and all that, people are getting inspired and having fun and that's great, and it's not actually unrelated enough to my prompt to ask for reposting, but I also wish I could clarify what I want/like without feeling like a mean party pooper. Plus I feel a bit awkward just abandoning my own prompts once they start squicking me out, because I know a lot of people want reassurance/feedback from OPs, and I don't want to lie and contribute to stuff I dislike any more than I want to be insulting/discouraging.
does this happen to other people? how do you feel like is the best way to deal with it?
You know, I actually haven't left a prompt of my own yet, but I've seen this and as a filler it sometimes makes me feel a little weird. Like, when it comes down to it I'll only pay attention to what the OP said as far as my jumping off point, but I do sometimes feel like, "man, a bunch of people probably wish someone else who would've done X and Y had taken this on."
When that happens to me I usually just try to lead the conversation back in my direction by making a new comment off the last part I did like (usually pretending to be a new anon). Just ask questions. maybe by commenting directly to the prompt, that are more towards what you want. It works about 50% of the time lol.
Re: your prompts getting taken in ways you don't like
Sorry, I've never actually had this happen to me. Probably because I've only ever had one prompt partially filled.
But as an author: Give minimal feedback? I *have* had this happen to me. I got a "I'm so excited that you filled my prompt! I'll be back to review later!" that never had a follow-through. Yeah, that's definitely damning with faint praise from the OP. Message received. (The other commenters who loved my stuff sure cushioned that blow, though.)
You can be a little less blunt than that OP about it, though. Surely there's *something* you liked about the fill. A detail about Fisk's view of the world that the author included? A cute reference to the larger Marvel universe? Some good meta for the show that you haven't seen in other fics? Honestly, it's probably a lot like a parent admiring a kid's artwork of crayon scribblings sometimes, and I think I've probably gotten that kind of review from OPs too, but they were tactful enough about it that I didn't realize it. (Well, except maybe for the one that was more of a derailment, and I did label that as a not-fill and keep it out of the Completed post. That OP had absolutely no obligation to me, is what I'm saying.)
And YKINMKATO applies to the OP, too, so feel free to drop out and explain why, if you're getting a 50-part fill. Just say, "I really like this and this, but, you know, the character of Wesley just squicks me out so I can't read any more of this." I don't think I've ever seen a multi-part fill that didn't have multiple people commenting, anyhow, so everybody else will hopefully have fun continuing without you.
(And you'll hopefully get more and better advice from other people. It's not like I'm a long-established kinkmeme Miss Manners, here. I hate how my posts always look like pronouncements from on high, and I can't figure out how to change that.)
Or just comment directly on the stuff you don't like and try to nicely say 'I think it would be more interesting if this happened instead of that' still not outting yourself as OP if you don't want to. I've never had one of my prompts go far off track and then get filled, it's always just talking. If that happens tho I agree with the other anon that said find SOMETHING to compliment, and then make a more specific prompt. Say you liked the other one but you wanted something a bit different.. And add the thing that you wanted and the things about the other one that you do NOT want. Because that one was good but you just want something different, see?
First off, clariry in the prompt is important. If you only want specific pairings or want to say "Ok with this, bit not that", that's totally fair. But I understand that you can't always predict people's ideas and tangents.
I also think there's absolutely nothing wrong with coming on and clearly stating you're the OP and how you feel. Because I do think most people are attentive to that and will either start a new prompt or try and take it in a different direction. I personally have said, at some point on this meme, variations on the following:
"OP here. That's not really my ship bit if you want to fill it that way, I know other people will enjoy it".
"OP here saying that I prefer X over Y personally, but it's really ultimately uo to you."
"OP saying for what it's worth, I was actually thinking..."
You can't really tell a filler what to do - most write to please the OP but some could care less amd just found inspiration. But you can certaibly share your opinion and let everyone know what your intentions were or why yiu're checking out. I always find that kind of feedback helpful as someone attempting a fill.
I've had scenarios as an author where the OP never reviewed (or at least never identified as such) and scenarios where I've been the OP and not commented because I honestly felt like the fic wasn't really what I wanted. I figure better to say nothing than come off rude with a comment. The person may just assume you left the meme altogether that way. That's what I always figure.
I always post prompts knowing anything could happen. And fill them knowing I filled it differently than another person would, for better or worse. It just kinda is what it is.
No, definitely not destitute during Shadowlands - he had access to all of the Hand's funds then - but he was pretty much a vagrant in the 4-part miniseries that made him decide to be Daredevil again.
I sort of wonder if in a twisted way he partly did it for Foggy, to reverse Foggy's disbarring and give him his life back without the complications of getting himself legally declared alive again etc.
I know everybody has probably read this already, but here's a fascinating article in which they discuss Matt's suits: http://www.tvstyleguide.com/daredevil/how-to-dress-like-matthew-murdock/
(They actually discuss the meta reasons for the stylistic choices, for anyone who hasn't read it. It's awesome.)
So now I know that, "out of universe," Matt owns Paul Smith suits and probably Brooks Brothers oxford shirts.
Which *still* doesn't answer OP's question. Although I personally would go Paul Smith for the more expensive suit OP wanted, just for the meta reference. I could easily see interns at Landman & Zack saving $1,000.0 for a really nice suit, which is about what one costs, according to the article.
For those of you who would like to post your work to Ao3, but don't want certain material associated with your account (and who don't want to put your work in the anonymousdaredevils account).
Any work posted to this collection will have the author name show up as Anonymous. There is no link back to your profile from the work. Basically, you can post the work from your own account, but the work gets listed as being by Anonymous. You just choose "Anonymous (anonymous)" when you pick which collection to post to, the same way you'd choose the Daredevil Kink Meme collection, and it anonymizes your work.
I've had that happen, and if it's completely out of line with what I want in the prompt I'll announce myself as the OP and either outright say that's not what I want (in a nice way, of course), or suggest that the people make a new prompt. :-)
Having now read Daredevil: Reborn I make the case that this falls under 'extraneous circumstances where Matt would give up his financial stability that he has worked hard for.'
Just for fun, this collection is not a substitute for orphaning your work. People looking at your profile will be able to see that you have a work or works in the "Anonymous" collection, and they will be able to deduce the fandom from your list of fandoms.
But if enough of us do this, they'll have a much harder time telling *which entry* is ours, right? And since I have a feeling that these will be the ones we're more ashamed of, that's all to the good.
(I may even post my horrible "zombies" fic from the Halloween post this way. And trust me, I'm definitely ashamed of it.)
Hi anon! I've also used the Anonymous collection thingy, and I can't find anything on my profile that would indicate that I've put something in the Anonymous collection. Nothing that says "mystery work" or anything of that nature, so the site must have changed since whoever wrote that on the profile.
I've written 5 fics, but 3 of them are in the Anonymous collection. My profile only lists me as having 2 works. I can only see my entire works list when I look under Statistics.
I find it's better (as a filler and commenter) to have an OP who isn't shy about letting me know if I'm pushing their boundaries but who isn't rude about it. If the fill is stuff you prompted mixed with stuff you hadn't thought to rule out there will be *something* you like in there, so why not try phrasing it like "I really like ___, but ___ isn't my thing. Sorry, but I need to check out of this. I know others will really like this, though, so please keep it up!" And then make a more specific prompt with an 'inspired by' note.
Well there are certain things that mark a lack of knowledge of gay sex for sure - lack of lube or use of something as lube that is NOT advised irl are a biggie there. Like even someone who's never had anal sex or penetrative sex should generally be able to figure that one out, but whatever.
I personally am not super sexually active to have the breadth of experience to know for sure, but I reaaaally wonder sometimes about described sexual positions that seem particularly bendy or impossible. And amounts of cum that are possible or how quickly a guy can get it back up. Just based on conversations with other people about sex and talking to guy friends, I suspect many fic writers are pretty okay with being nonrealistic about those things.
^All excellent points that ensure this lesbian will at every opportunity avoid writing male slash (or anything focusing on a penis or penises) that isn't so far AU that I can't possibly get it wrong. This is what omegaverse and alien AUs were made for. Tbh, though, I did a ton of research when I started writing smut and then realised that a lot of readers don't seem to care. Like, if it's hot it doesn't really need to be realistic.
I got more comments on the lines of 'had to look up what a frenulum is' than anything else until I retreated from phallic reality.
